| What is Parkinson's Disease? |
Parkinson's disease occurs when a group of cells that produce a chemical called dopamine begin to malfunction and eventually die. Dopamine transports signals to the parts of the brain that control muscle balance and movement. For unexplained reasons, these cells begin to die at a heightened rate and the amount of dopamine produced in the brain decreases. The four primary symptoms of Parkinson's disease include:
- tremor or trembling hands, arms, legs, jaw, and face
- rigidity or stiffness of the limbs and trunk
- slowness of movement
- postural instability or impaired balance and coordination
In an emergency situation, medical personnel often need to know your medical conditions, including Parkinson's disease, before treatment can begin. MedicAlert quickly relays your vital medical information to authorized emergency personnel, which helps to reduce medical errors.
